North Central Accreditation–School Improvement Process

In preparation for the first Quality Assurance Review (QAR) in January 2010, the MAYA staff has been diligently working on the AdvancED Accreditation process.  This includes:  the Standards Assessment Report (SAR), the School Data Profile, the identification of the school’s goals and strategies, and a School Improvement Plan (SIP).

MAYA

Our school strives to deliver on it’s promise of what it claims to be.  We are striving to fulfill the requirements of accreditation as outlined by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) and AdvancED.  We are honest and truthful in communicating and reporting results to our stakeholders.  All individuals engage in professional and ethical behavior which is conducive of an Islamic environment.

The school improvement process has two major functions:

  1. It examines the school’s purpose, student goals, our curriculum, and the present performance of students.
  2. It describes a course of action to be taken over a three to five year period in order to make IMPROVEMENTS.

The process of completing the SAR consists of reviewing the AdvancED Accreditation standards, which serve as a tool for schools to continually be in the process of self-assessment and improvement.

·  In addition to working on the SAR, we have also created a school profile, which is a living document shared by all staff members that contains demographic data, achievement data, contextual data, and perception data.  We collect and consistently update our data.  This provides us with an opportunity to analyze, draw conclusions, and implement strategies that would enhance the quality of education that we deliver to our students.

·  We have strictly defined goals for reading, writing, Arabic, and Islamics.  In order to meet these goals, we created an SIP and are working on the implementation of new strategies in the 2009/2010 school year.  Some of these strategies include: 6+1 writing traits, writing prompts, guided reading, and developing an Arabic/ Islamic curriculum.

North Central Accreditation

In preparation for the first Quality Assurance Review in the Fall of 2009, MAYA staff has been diligently working on the AvancED Accreditation process including the Standards Assessment Report (which is commonly known as SAR), the School Data Profile, and the identification of the school’s goals and strategies.  The process of completing the SAR consists of reviewing the AdvancED Accreditation standards, which serve as a tool for schools to continually self-assess and improve. In addition to working on the SAR, we have also created a school profile, which is a living document shared by all staff members and contains demographic data, achievement data, contextual data, and perception data.  Collecting and continually updating the previous types of data provides MAYA with the opportunity to analyze, draw conclusions, and implement strategies that would enhance the quality of education that MAYA delivers to its students.  Lastly, we have defined goals for reading and writing skills.  In order to meet these goals, we are working on the implementation of new strategies in the 2009/2010 school year.  Some of these strategies include: 6+1 writing traits, writing prompts, and guided reading.

The Romulus Elementary staff developed the school improvement plan designed to increase student achievement. Our data was based on our student’s MEAP, standardized test scores and local assessments. The hallmark of the Transition model is to review every child’s progress as he/she leaves the 6th grade in preparation for transition to the middle school. The review includes the child’s achievement in academics, careers, and employability.

An individual plan, if needed, is recommended to help support the student at the middle school. This review is conducted by the 6th grade student, his parents, and teacher.

N.C.A. Goals for 2009-2010 are:

• All students will be proficient or above grade level readers.

• All students will be proficient writers.

• All students will be proficient at mathematical problem solving and computation skills.

Testimonials

"I think the MAYA vision is worth the time that was put into making it. I belive the Muslim American Youth Academy is doing exactly what is said in the vision. Especially where it says "the active involvement of dedicated teachers." I think that all the teachers are doing their jobs the way they should.  I hope they keep it up." ~ Tarek Tlais (8th grade)
